Mission:

The VAIB lobbies wthin Virginia and Washington, D.C. on matters relating to moral issues; abortion, marriage, gambling, etc; other matters of concern to Independent Baptist Churches and their ministries.

Eddy Aliff was saved in 1971 near the beginning of his junior year of high school while attending Fellowship Baptist Church. Not long after that Eddy's girlfriend (now his wife) Carol, was also saved. During his college years he remained faithful attending church and serving in vaious youth ministries. After completing college and marrying his high school sweatheard, Carol, he began teaching in the Christian school at Fellowship. They served there from 1976 until 1980 when God directed them to a ministry in Arkansas. They remained in Arkansas until 1983 when they were called to serve at Landmark Baptist Church in Richmond where they served from 1983 until 2009 under Dr. Jim Sumpter and then Pastor Don Sumpter. While at Landmark God blessed them with three children: Erik is married; after graduating from Christian college, he and his woife began teaching in a Christian school in Wisconsin. Sarah is a graduate of a Christian college; she was married in June 2010 and now works in the same Christian school as Erik. Joel graduated from a Christian college with an Air Force ROTC program and is now in training to be a navigator for the Air Force.  Eddy last visited KBC 27 March 2011.

Feb. 8, 2013 Pastor Update Letter PDF Print E-mail

Dear Pastor,

You Responded! Thank You!

In my last letter, I asked for churches to update our files and consider receiving letters by email. We had a great response with nearly 20 more churches changing over to email!  If you have never completed an information form, or there have been changes in the last year, please consider contacting our office, or go on our website (www.vaib.org) to the “Contact” tab and complete the “Information Form for Church & Pastor.”

Bills on our radar which are still active!
For our “2013 General Assembly Update” of bills we are following, please go to our website or click on this link: http://www.vaib.org/page15294910.aspx. You can also find immediate status changes by clicking on http://www.facebook.com/VAIB.ORG .

HB1617 & SB1074 prohibiting discrimination of religious student groups by public universities continue to move forward with high hopes of passage.
HB1642 & SB908 protecting the fundamental rights of parents to direct the upbringing of their children continue to move forward with high hopes of passage.
SB701 establishing nondiscrimination in state government hiring based on sexual orientation is now in the House Committee on General Laws for consideration.
Efforts to allow non-public high school students to participate in sports programs at the public school appear to be failing.
HB1575 affecting home child care facilities seems to be moving forward. This bill would remove the counting of children of the operator in the total number of children being cared for in that home.
SB1369 permits riverboat gambling to provide income to offset tolls for certain localities. This bill does not appear to have much support.
SJ287 (Constitutional amendment) would provide more clarifying language regarding freedom of speech and religion as related to public schools and other areas. This bill is moving forward but will require two years to complete the cycle before putting the matter on the ballot to be voted on by Virginians.

Confusing Signals
Several have contacted me regarding certain votes by legislators which seem to be contrary to conservative standards. I have talked with several legislators regarding these votes. The most difficult application of standing for conservative (Christian) values occurs when a legislator wants to balance applying Christian compassion and/or Constitutional protections to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” (which actually is in the Declaration of Independence!). While their intentions are good, unfortunately their reasoning is not always correct.

Pray as I seek to provide legislators with biblical principles to help them in voting properly.

In His Service,

Eddy

Dear Pastor,

Some Legislators Call It Quits
If I have spoken in your church, you may have heard me ask, “How many of you would be willing to serve as a legislator if everyone quit?” As is fairly normal for Virginia, several good legislators will not be running for re-election this fall: Sal Iaquinto of Virginia Beach (served since 2006); Joe Johnson of Abingdon (served since 1990); Don Merricks of Martinsville (served since 2008); John Cox of Ashland (served since 2010).

By now you may have heard that Lt. Governor Bill Bolling will not run for Governor as an independent in the November 2013 elections. We are thankful for his many years of service and help for conservative issues.

Each had his reasons for serving; the same for leaving. Pray for strong conservatives to be elected to continue the work these men have done.

Follow Legislation
For our “2013 General Assembly Update” of bills we are following, please go to our website or to this link: http://www.vaib.org/page15294910.aspx. After the reconvened session on April 3, I will give a report of the results.

Churches & “Obamacare”
No matter what we may think of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also known as "Obamacare," it is the law and churches should be aware of how it may affect them. To find out more, follow this link on the CLA web site: http://www.christianlaw.org/cla/index.php/articles/comments/health_care_at_what_cost

Are you coming to the 37th Annual Meeting September 19-20, 2013?

Check out our web site www.vaib.org for more information.

Make plans to come and invite your church members and other pastors as well to hear Dr. David Gibbs Jr. of the Christian Law Association!

In His Service,

Eddy
